After walking 1000 miles this past April – August on the Oregon Coast as Prayer Pilgrim, I moved to Seattle where I started serving non-profit causes and ministries as a web developer.
With our entrance into 2016, I knew I wanted to continue as a pilgrim and use walking to serve the poor and those in greatest need around the world. I learned that the United Nations’ World Water Day happens on March 22, so I decided to use that as a date to do something I hope will be a tremendous impact to thousands of lives.
My primary focus in life is to wipe out all forms of poverty, spiritually and physically. With this mission I have launched a campaign at dylanraines.org to use my walks and build a community of people around the world who walk to end poverty and connect with one another.
So, on World Water Day (March 22, 2016) I will begin a 100 mile #WalkForWater from Seattle to Canada to raise funds that will restore water wells for people in South Sudan, a country where more than 30% of the people do not have access to safe water. I learned about what’s happening in South Sudan when I spoke last month with Steve Roese, director of Water Is Basic. After our conversation I was convinced that I wanted to use this walk to do something big through them (and Steve is joining me for the walk on day 1!).
I learned all about their work to repair and restore water wells in South Sudan. There are an estimated 10,000 water wells in South Sudan that no longer function because the communities were not engaged nor trained in how to maintain them. Water Is Basic engages communities, repairs the water wells, and trains the community to maintain them so that they have a lasting and sustainable source of clean, safe water. Restoring water wells is also much more affordable than drilling and building a new well.
With that in mind, I set the goal for this World Water Day walk to raise $20,000 that will restore 15 water wells in South Sudan. I invite and welcome you to join me!
Please visit the event’s GoFundMe Page and chip in $5 if you can. My hope is that this event will be spread around and that many of us will come together to give a small amount towards making a huge impact on thousands of lives.
Walk with me on World Water Day where you live. I will be launching some tools for connecting people through walking. Visit my Walk With Me page to sign up and choose how many steps you’ll walk.
